Firms using Gmail for their email may want to use Gmail's mail server to send bills from RTG Bills. To do so requires special settings in both RTG Bills and Gmail.
This page applies to the Windows PC version of RTG Bills. For RTG Bills Online, see Using Gmail with RTG Bills Online.
You need to create a Google app password for RTG Bills. Go to your Google account:
In the search box near the top of the page (Search Google Account), enter this:
create app password
Under Google Account results, choose App passwords. That should take you to the App passwords page. There you can enter an App name. We suggest RTG Bills for PC. Click the Create button.
Now you will see a new page with the 16-character app password displayed. Copy it, ignoring the spaces. This is the password you will use in your email settings.
Now start RTG Bills.
Use the following settings in RTG Bills, Setup > Email:
SMTP server: smtp.gmail.com
SMTP Port: 5870
Server Requires Authentication: checked
User Name: (your Gmail email address)
Password: (your app password)
Display Name: (your firm name)
Email Address: (your Gmail email address, again)
Be sure to enter your newly-created app password, not your Google account password. The idea here is to use this application-specific password, which only works in RTG Bills, rather than your Google account password, which unlocks your entire Google account. This helps to keep your Google account safe.
Note that port 5870 means that RTG Bills will use port 587 and TLS encryption.
These settings will allow RTG Bills to send email through your Gmail account. Use the Test button to confirm that the settings work. You should receive a test message similar to this:
This is a test message from RTG Bills.
Sender name: (your firm name)
Sender email: (your Gmail email address)
SMTP server: smtp.gmail.com
If you want to use Gmail's mail server to send bills, use the settings described above. An alternative is to use the mail server provided by your Internet Service Provider (ISP).
