Release Notes
- Database location
The program files and the data files can be in two separate locations. This is required for compatibility with Windows Vista [and all later versions of Windows].
The Destination Location, where the programs are installed, is typically:
C:\Program Files\Softw\
and the Data Location, where the data files are installed, is typically:
C:\ProgramData\RTG\Softfile\
or, for Windows XP:
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\RTG\Softfile\
If you upgrade from a previous version of Softfile, your programs and data will both be in one location, probably here:
C:\Program Files\Softw\
You must move the data files out of the Program Files folder to a new Data Location.
- New help file
The help files used with previous versions are not compatible with Windows Vista, so new help files were created for this version.
- Reminder dates
Reminders are maintained automatically by Softfile. If you previously put remind.exe in your Startup group, that is no longer necessary.
- External links
Links that refer to a file (the target) outside of Softfile will open with the application assigned to them by Windows. Whatever application opens when you double-click an icon for that file will be the application that Softfile uses to display the target.
For example, if double-clicking a PDF file opens it in Adobe Reader, then clicking a link to a PDF file in Softfile will cause Adobe Reader to open and display the file.
Similarly, a link to a Web page will start your Web browser to display it. Previously, Web pages were displayed inside the Softfile window.
Email addresses are a special case. They are automatically treated as mailto links if they appear in a Softfile page. Clicking the address will open your default email application to compose a new message to that email address.
Known Problems
- Softfile shares components with Internet Explorer, so you should always install the latest version of Internet Explorer for the best reliability and security.
- You cannot create a link to an FTP site.
