Q: I'm getting an error message that says Run-time error '3049': Cannot open database
A: This message indicates that the database is corrupted. This could happen if, for example, you were entering fees when the computer crashed.
In many cases, the database can be fixed by the procedures suggested here. Before you begin, create a backup of your data: File > Backup. Keep the backup until you are sure that the repair procedures suggested below have not caused further damage.
All users must exit RTG Bills and RTG Timer.
1. Start RTG Bills and choose File > Compact Database from the menu. If the database can be compacted without errors, repeat what you were doing that triggered the error. Most likely you will not get the error.
2. If the Compact Database command gives the same error message (but without the error number), try to fix the problem with Jetcomp, as described here.
3. If Jetcomp succeeds and you no longer get run-time error 3049, you may still see other errors. Use the Repair Database program to fix them.
4. Once you are no longer getting error messages, use the Verify Matter Balance and Verify Retainer Balance reports to check for additional problems.
